“Unleash the Power of Age” at Senior Conference, May 22-24
The Robert W. Jackson Annual Senior Conference will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 22-24, at Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley, WV. The theme of the conference this year is “Unleash the Power of Age,” which will be reflected in workshops and activities.
Wednesday afternoon will be a County Fair theme, with a variety of music and outdoor activities that include bocce ball, corn hole, horseshoes, ladder golf, the Department of Natural Resources (hunting safety/hunting simulator), and Bill Leesburg doing caricature drawings. Abraham Lincocln may stop by to celebrate West Virginia’s Sesquicentennial.
Coach Greg White, former Marshall University and University of Charleston basketball coach, will discuss The Winning Edge. Don Nehlen, former head football coach at West Virginia University, has been invited to be a guest speaker on Thursday, May 23.
Here’s more or what’s planned. You will be able to make button bracelets with Karen Smith, duct tape items with Sherry Newcombe, and birdseed pinecones with Donna Conley. You can learn more about volunteer opportunities, practical tips for healthy aging, Facebook basics, legal issues facing seniors, homeopathic/alternative medicine and Senior Olympics. You may want to watch a cooking demo, “My Plate for Older Adults;” go on a scavenger hunt; learn cake decorating; take dancing lessons; get a legislative update; learn more about the value of physical activities; and find out how “Green Thumbs, Healthy Joints” can help you. Do you enjoy singing? Join the RWJ Senior Conference Choir. There will be practice on Wednesday evening, and the choir will perform on Friday morning.
You might also want to take advantage of the opportunities Cedar lakes offers for outdoor activities, such as fishing (WV fishing license is required, and you would need to bring your own fishing pole) horseshoes, hiking, volleyball and tennis.
Sign up, and join the fun! There’s something at this year’s Senior Conference for everyone. The agenda will be posted on the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services website (http://www.wvseniorservices.gov) as more information becomes available. Please contact the senior center for registration information.
